Threatening Coal for Christmas
Tried this once but the kids said “what’s coal ?” with that disparaging ‘Mum’s so old fashioned’ look on their faces. Next time I said it would be a sack full of pine cones but they pointed out that they’re out of season. After saying it would be a sack full of snow and getting a cheerful “yay,” I gave up. Now I just threaten to stay up partying all night so he can’t find a moment to sneak in and deliver the presents,(realistic and it works a treat!”)

Last year we tried putting a small bag of coal in the top of each kid’s stocking. They looked confused for a moment, then they pulled out the other presents that were under the bag of coal, and merrily ripped those open, and never once looked back at the bag of coal . . . Hmm, we thought, what a failure that was! They didn’t care that there was coal in the stocking instead of some of the presents, because they still got presents anyway. We figured it wasn’t worth repeating this year, even though the pre-Christmas behaviour wasn’t any better.
This year on Christmas morning Dear Son excitedly pulled everything out of his stocking and shrieked, “No coal!!! And I wasn’t even good!”
Guess we’ve messed that one up
I wonder if the tooth fairy delivers coal?
